January 2018 Meeting Highlights
  • ​The first SBDC meeting of the year focused on networking among members and discussing teaming opportunities.

October 2017 Meeting Highlights
  • SBDC held a joint event with the Washington Cyber Roundtable as part of FedScoop Cyber Week
  • The event featured Mr. Charles Nelson, Deputy Director for Outreach at U.S. Cyber Command's Capabilities Development Group and Mr. John Mills, Director of Cybersecurity Policy, Strategy, and International Integration in the Office of the CIO at the Department of Defense.
  • Speakers and attendees discussed how the government is taping small businesses for the most innovative cyber solutions
 
September 2017 Meeting Highlights
  • Kevin Boshears, Director of the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU) Department of Homeland Security discussed the resources available to small businesses that can improve their chances of winning work with DHS.

  • This month SBDC held our bi-annual meeting devoted solely to buisiness development.
  • During the meeting members discussed contract opportunities, looked for teaming partners and shared ideas per BD roundtables.
  • Conversations had in these meetings led towards opportunities and profit.
February 2016 Meeting Highlights
  • Erik Brine, Science & Technology Program Examiner with the National Security Division at the Office of Management and Budget, gave members an update of the recently released federal budget.
  • John Pace, C.P.A. at Gelman, Rosenberg & Freeman discussed the "do’s and don’ts" related to audits of incurred cost submissions and accounting systems.
  • Brian Shea and Dan Spector, Principals at member comany Simon Everett, Ltd., and Brianna Broad, Senior Account Executive at kglobal, shared their success through OEA's Defense Industry Adjustment.
January 2016 Meeting Highlights
  • Daniel George, Attorney Advisor, Office of Hearings and Appeals, Small Business Administration (SBA) presented on the protest and appeals processes and policies that directly impact small businesses. He also identified common errors businesses make when filing protests and appeals.
  • Brett Sanders, an attorney with Frankel, PLLC, spoke about the role of lawyers in investigations and bid protests.
  • George Meyers, Chairman of the SBDC and Managing Partner of The Meyers Group, gave members an overview of what the current budget landscape and political climate means for small businesses.
December 2015 Meeting Highlights
  • To celebrate the holiday season SBDC held a holiday party at Clyde's in Tysons Corner. Members and SBDC partners networked and mingled over drinks and hors d'oeuvres. 
November 2015 Meeting Highlights
  • During the first half of the meeting, members participated in round table discussions about opportunities and their capabilities at certain agencies. 
  • Emily Webster Murphy, Policy Director and Senior Counsel for the Committee on Small Business in the U.S. House of Representatives gave members an overview on current legislation impacting small businesses and discussed what the Committee sees on the horizon in 2016.
  • Ellen Meinhart, International Trade Manager at the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP), educated members on how they can utilize VEDP's offerings to successfully expand into international markets.
October 2015 Meeting Highlights
  • Captain Shelby Mounts discussed how the Department of Defense could benefit through partnerships with industry. Check out the article covering his talk in Federal Times.
  • Chris Davidson, Senior Tax Manager at SC&H shared end of the year tax planning advice with members.
  • Joe Harris, founder of SBDC member company the J Harris Group, presented his company's capabilities and opportunities for collaboration with fellow members
  • John Mancuso, Business Development Director from SBDC member company Sciolex Corporation, presented his company's capabilities and opportunities for collaboration with fellow members
September 2015 Meeting Highlights
  • Intelligence Community (IC) “insider” Joe Mazzafro spoke to members about the defense budget and contracting with the IC.  Joe serves as an advisor to many senior leaders in govt and industry and has a unique vantage point . You can read his monthly blog for AFCEA International (the organization's most read blog) here.
  • Lee Dougherty, attorney at Offit Kurman,  shared with members tips and advise on how to best engage with lawyers when dealing with contracts and teaming agreements. Lee is a retired Army JAG and an expert in government contracting law.
  • Janet Jerge-Strongbox of  SBDC member company Strongbox Cyber Solutions discussed her company's capabilities and opportunities for collaboration with her fellow members.

  • Peter Daniel, from member company Future Integrated Systems, presented to members on how using Microsoft 365 could benefit the membership.
  • Member companies Prosol and Blue Dot Engineering presented on their capabilities.
  • Engility's DHS BD/Capture Manager, Brad Kidwell, spoke with members about how they can do business with Engility.
  • Westway Development Services, LLC., informed members about how they can lease SCIF space and other office facilities to help them win contracts.

March 2015 Meeting Summary
  • Jackie Robinson-Burnette, Associate Administrator, Office of Business Development at the U.S. Small Business Administration presented on the opportunities and resources her office has for small businesses. 
  • Attendees learned about creating and utilizing the top five marketing tools (website, boilerplate copy, corporate brochure, 1-page corporate sell sheet and capability brief) for government contractors from Antonella O'Brien, SBDC's Director of Planning and Engagements. 
 
February 2015 Meeting Summary
  • James P. Craft, SES, Deputy Director Information Enterprise Management (DDIEM), Chief Information Officer (CIO)/J-6, Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (JIEDDO) presented on the role of small businesses in the federal space.
  • Member company Devitas shared a business opportunity with the DIA with members.

January 2015 Meeting Summary
  • Dave Dawson, Associate Director of Marine Corps Systems Command's (MCSC) Office of Small Business Programs presented on how members can pursue opportunities successfully with the Marine Corps.
  • Representatived form Leidos gave an overview of the company's efforts to work with small businesses.
  • Global Commerce and Services, LLC., one of SBDC's newest HUB ZONE members, gave their corporate presentation. 
  • Members learned how they could become involved with the DS TAT contract vehicle from Prescient Edge. 
  • Business Development Working groups presented on their progress and upcoming activities.
 
December 2014 Meeting Summary
The meeting began with a presentation from Access National Bank on the bank's products and services for small businesses.  Member Corporate Briefings were presented by Prescient Edge and Cloudburst Technologies. Businesss Development Groups presented on their activities:
  • USMC BD WG is actively creating teams for a number of proposals
  • SBIR/STTR BD WG will be publishing their solicitation topics in January 
  • Ft Detrick BD WG is the quantifying opportunities stage
 
 A holiday social sponsored by Access National Bank was held after the meeting.
 
November 2014 Meeting Summary
On November 13th, Dr. David Isaacson, Lead for Intelligence Science and Technology Partnerships, for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence presented on how small businesses can work with his office. Denise Rudolph from JMU Employer Relations and Recruiting Services office discussed on how members can recruit JMU students as new employees. Member company ALEX Inc presented on their capabilities and contracting experience. Dr. Tom Richardson, lead for the new Grants BD Working Group presented on what members can gain by joining the group.
 
October 2014 Meeting Summary
 
The meeting featured a presentation from KForce Staffing Services on how they team with small businesses to assist with their contracting pursuits. Member company Alion presented on their capabilities. New Business Development Groups gave overviews of their goals.

Modern Day Marine Trade Show
 
SBDC participated in this year's Modern Day Marine Trade Show. Member companies Omegus Prime and Alaris co-sponsored the SBDC booth. There was extensive participation by key Quantico buying agencies including, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Marine Corps Systems Command, PEO Land Systems, Quantico Marine Base.
September 2014 Meeting Summary
 
On Sept. 11, 2014 representatives from SRA and DRS presented to members on how small businesses can successfully  pursuing teaming opportunities with large companies.  Future Integrated Systems gave their Member Corporate Presentation. 
 
August 2014 Meeting Summary
 
The August meeting focused on building current working groups and facilitating the creation of new working groups. This conversation was led by Ascendant Concepts, a member company of the SBDC. Members can view the presentations in the Members' Portal.
 
July 2014 Meeting Summary
 
The July meeting provided members with information on financing options for small businesses through presentations from Access National Bank and Boost LLC Capabilities. Member company 2HB also presented on their capabilities.

Miller's Office Supplies offers discounts to SBDC Members
SBDC members will now receive substantial discounts from Miller's Office Supplies, a small women-owned and locally based office supply company that has nationwide delivery.

JMU Presented at August Meeting 
James Madison University (JMU) will present at the SBDC August meeting, which will be held on the second Thursday of the month.  Not only is JMU a member of the SBDC, but they are also a partner in our educational outreach efforts.

Street Legal Industries, Inc., was named the Tennessee 2014 HUB Zone Small Business of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) on May 5, 2014.  There are 560,000 small businesses in Tennessee that are eligible for the award.
 
Street Legal Industries, Inc., specializes in providing technical support to federal, state and local governments.  Their headquarters is located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
